PB KIDS CAN 5 UNIT 3. TEST ESSENTIAL

 Answers: a 2   b 6   c 3   d 5  e 1  f 4

I live in a beautiful city.

In the past, it was very different from today.

There were lots of traffic jams in the morning,

but now people use the buses and the tram more,

so the roads are quieter and there’s not much pollution.

 When I was younger,

there wasn’t a lake near my city,

but five years ago, they made one.

There are lots of rocks around it, and many birds like to build their home there.

A long time ago, there were some fields near my city and there were many trees.

Now there’s a factory there where they recycle plastic.

It’s very small

 – it’s only got one small chimney.

U3:2 Listen and tick (✔) a or b.

M: Did you have a good trip, Richard?

B: Yes, I did. I love the countryside. It’s beautiful.

M: Did you go to the lake like last year?

B: No, I didn’t. There weren’t any lakes, but there was a stream with lots of fish!

 2

G: Was it more green in the city when you were young, Dad?

M: Yes, there were many plants and trees, Lucy. Lots of animals found shelter in the tree trunks. The air was cleaner, too.

G: I’d love to have more trees now, too. There are only big motorways with lots of cars.

 3

B: What did you do when you visited your grandparents, Mary?

G: Well you know they live by the sea.

B: Oh yes, I remember. It’s a beautiful place.

G: Well, I sat on a big rock by the ocean and watched all the birds fly. It was lovely. I walked on the beach, too. Sand is nicer than soil between your toes!

 4

B: Did you have a nice time in Italy, Lisa?

G: Yes, I did. We stayed on a farm. We got the plane from a new airport.

B: Oh really! A new one?

G: Yes! There wasn’t one a few years ago. But there is one now!

5

W: Do you like the city where you live, Paul?

B: Yes, I do. There aren’t many traffic jams and I like the parks, especially the new one.

W: A few years ago, there was a huge tree there wasn’t there?

B: Yes, there was. I enjoyed sitting under the branches in summer – they gave lots of shade. But they had to cut it down, it was really sad.

W: What are you doing, David?

B: I’m writing about how our city was in the past. Did you know that there were lots of farms?

W: Really? No, I didn’t. That’s surprising. But now there are factories and other buildings. It’s a shame.
